San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico is the oldest city on US territory (St. Augustine, Florida the oldest city in the continental). Founded in 1521 by Juan Ponce de León, who named it City of Puerto Rico ("Rich Port"). The history of San Juan begins a logn time before its official foundation, in 1493, during his second voyage, Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico. He named the island "San Juan Bautista", in honor of John the Baptist. But was not until 1508, that the Spanish government appointed Juan Ponce de León as the first governor of the island. He founded the original settlement in Caparra, now known as Pueblo Viejo, behind the almost land-locked harbor just to the west of the present metropolitan area and the city quickly became Spain's most important military outpost in the Caribbean. A year later, the original settlement was relocated to a nearby coastal islet (to the site of what is now called Old San Juan) and named Puerto Rico (Rich Port). Sometime during the 1520s, confusion over the names led to a switch, the island took the name of Puerto Rico and the town became San Juan. Today, San Juan is known as "La Ciudad Amurallada" (the walled city) and is one of the biggest and best natural harbors in the Caribbean and is the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas (after Santo Domingo, which was officially founded on August 5, 1498.) Sounds and Sights of Hurricane Maria's over Puerto Rico: an All-Nighter in 8 minutes Mostly dark after I lost power and as winds got stronger, this video chronicles the 8 or so hours that the toughest parts of the storm battered my area in Puerto Rico, just South and West of San Juan. The worst hurricane in nearly 100 years, hurricane Maria left a path of destruction across Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with St Croix being the most affected of the US Virgin Islands. I have more videos coming up about the aftermath in the area where I live or where I stayed for the hurricane. Be aware that my area was relatively "well treated" by vicious hurricane Maria...most of the damage is at the point of landfall on the Southeast coast of Puerto Rico, in areas related to dams, the mountains, and again on the west coast where the bottom part (worst part) of the storm hit. Many areas in the central mountainous area are still up to today, isolated geographically due to landslides, loss of bridges, and blockage of roads by massive amounts of debris (mostly large trees).

Fantastic music as well as the delicious 'lechon' (roasted suckling pig) in the very popular Lechonera district of Barrio Guavate, Cayey, Puerto Rico. We ate at the place we saw on the 'Travel Channel' hosted by Tony Bourdain...'Lechonera Los Pinos.' This video was taken just outside the very popular eatery. There were about 3-4 'lechoneras' in this vicinity near Los Pinos.

10 Best Places To Start A New Life Packing up your life and moving somewhere completely new is not an easy task – but it just may be exactly what you need. Go somewhere where the climate or culture better fits your tastes and personality. There are many places in the world which very few people ever think about when contemplating a change like this. Here are 10 of the Best Places To Start A New Life. Suva, Fiji Living in Fiji can be cheap or expensive depending on the lifestyle you chose to follow. If you want the city life but on a smaller scale, then Suva, the capital, is for you. Fiji is consistently ranked in the top five for cost of living, quality of life and friendliness of the people. It’s ideal for anybody starting to become tired of the fast-paced city life they’re used to, without giving up everything they know. In Suva, you can find apartments and houses from just $250 a month, with more expensive and luxury options available too. Florianopolis, Brazil Nothing says “fresh start” like Brazil. Positive reports calling lush “Floripa” one of Brazil’s best cities to live in has influenced people from all around the world to move here, creating a vibe as cosmopolitan as it is tropical. It has great infrastructure, many job possibilities, especially in technology and tourism, and a seemingly universal willingness to celebrate anything at any time. Life here is as convenient as it is sweet. Plus, the island has 42 beaches. Santorini, Greece There are not many places in the world where you can enjoy exquisitely clear waters while perched on the rim of a massive active volcano in the middle of the sea. Santorini, or any other island part of the Greek Cyclades, are a dream come true. Candy-coloured houses carved into cliffs, sapphire waters, gleaming white buildings topped with half-spheres... These islands truly have a character of their own. Here you’ll find peace as you roam the black sand beaches or watch the legendary sunsets, which seem tinted with every shade of an artist’s palette. Old San Juan, Puerto Rico Full of beautiful architecture, colourful houses, narrow cobblestone streets, museums, forts and ocean views, Old San Juan is a perfect place to just pause and find yourself. Puerto Rican people are friendly, welcoming and very nice. They'll guide you and help you to get settled when you arrive and they are happy to answer any questions you need answering. Avarua, Cook Islands Located about 2,000 kilometres north east of New Zealand, the tropical beaches of Avarua are no less gorgeous than those of the Cyclades or Florianopolis. You can rent an apartment here for just $130 a month. The island also attracts comparatively few tourists: around 100,000 foreigners visit every year, compared to the eight million who go to Hawaii. So you won’t have crowds of people spoiling your enjoyment of Avarua’s attractions — which include observing the population of whales (The Aquatic Marine Mammal – not the country), going for long relaxing walks, and enjoying the amazing scenery. The only catch is that foreigners aren’t allowed to buy property on the island, although they can rent it for up to 60 years. Koh Thonsáy, Cambodia This small island in southern Cambodia is a real paradise of jungles and beaches. The population here is so low that it’s possible to find accommodation for a ridiculously small amount of money. You can spend your time relaxing on the beach, or exploring the jungle caves. For just $5, the fishermen will cook you a delicious meal made from freshly-caught fish and crab. Other seafood products will cost you no more than $1-2 here. The one drawback is that the island’s beaches are not well-kept tourist spots, but essentially areas of wilderness infrequently taken over by wild dogs or other animals. A place for those who really want to get away from civilisation. The Pearl Islands, Panama An amazing archipelago lying thirty kilometres to the west of mainland Panama. A huge number of pearls were once mined there; at another time pirates used it as their hiding place. Now, it’s become a haven full of wonderful resorts used by the local population. You can rent a small house here by the sea for around $300 a month. The Pearl Islands are ideal for those who want to escape from the world. In terms of the scenery, it’s probably one of the most impressive places on the planet. Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria This little place is nestled in a valley in northern Bulgaria. Veliko Tarnovo is undoubtedly one of the most agreeable places on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, often called the Bulgarian Riviera. It’s as beautiful as France, but here a bottle of wine will cost you just 80 cents, whilst ... As Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm that the National Hurricane Center calls "extremely dangerous," is making its way west through the Caribbean Sea. Irma, the strongest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic outside of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, is passing north of Puerto Rico Wednesday night, forecasters at the NHC say, and has devastated the island of Barbuda. The storm maintained its 185-mph winds after making its first landfall on Barbuda early Wednesday. "Irma is a potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane and will bring life-threatening wind, storm surge and rainfall hazards" to areas it affects, the NHC says. The agency urges the completion of any emergency preparations and evacuations in the storm's path. Irma's path has been the subject of speculation, particularly as it nears the U.S. East Coast over the next three days. The NHC's forecasts now show the storm's path tracking up the eastern coast of Florida — rather than through the center or Gulf Coast, as in earlier projections. In Florida, where the hurricane could make landfall on Sunday, a mandatory evacuation order for the Florida Keys was expected to be issued Wednesday night, and Gov. Rick Scott warned that Irma "is bigger, faster and stronger than Hurricane Andrew," the 1992 storm that killed 65 people and caused more than $25 billion in damage.

Gov. Alejandro García Padilla said on Sunday that the territory’s Government Development Bank will not make a $422 million payment that is due by May 1st because Puerto Rico needs the money to provide essential public services. If Congress does not act soon it is clear that Puerto Rico will continue to miss bond payments. It has to pay nearly $2 billion on July 1, an amount it will be very hard pressed to come up with. ========================================== *** TOP NEWS IN PUERTO RICO: John Oliver Enlists 'Hamilton' Creator to Rap About Puerto Rico Crisis "A commonwealth with not a lot of wealth, a not-quite nation, $70 billion topic of conversation," the Hamilton creator-star began, outlining the issues over brooding piano. "Hoping to God John Oliver's comical dissertation resonates with the Congress that got us in this situation. Along with suicidal tax incentive declarations, 'Yeah we'll pay your bonds first, close the hospital, fuck the patients.' This is an island, 100 miles across. A hurricane is coming and we're running up a loss." "It's nonpartisan," he continued. "The hard part is in convincing Congress Puerto Rico matters so their heart is in the fight for relief. Not a bailout, just relief, a belief that you can pass legislation to ease our grief. Paul Ryan, I'll come sing Hamilton at your house. I'll do-si-do with Pelosi. I'll wear my Hamilton blouse! Your citizens are suffering: stop the bleeding, stop the loss. Help Puerto Rico – it's just 100 miles across." ========================================== *** TOP NEWS IN PUERTO RICO: Reality of Zika Virus The current Zika virus outbreak did not begin in Puerto Rico. The CDC began reporting that several other countries in South America, Central America and the Caribbean were also experiencing active local Zika virus transmission. Travelers can take simple, common-sense steps to help avoid getting the Zika virus. The easiest way to avoid contracting the virus is to take steps to prevent mosquito bites and wear proper clothing while enjoying the outdoors. When it comes to the Zika virus, the general population has little to fear. The majority of Zika cases are concentrated in areas away from typical tourist destinations. Tennis player Monica Puig wins historic gold for Puerto Rico: Olympic gold-medal history was crafted for Puerto Rico by a 22-year-old tennis player, who was born in San Juan.
